Description

This subject covers the restructuring of organisational processes through the innovative use of information systems and information technology. We introduce current proposals for organisation restructuring and evaluate them through comparison with previous theories of restructuring.

Assumed Knowledge

A general appreciation of business environments, a knowledge of typical information technology applications and an ability to research and write well reasoned reports.

Learning experience

Students will learn through a combination of traditional lectures, tutorials, library research and group project work. Lectures will place recent literature on process transformation in the context of the history of business/IT relationships. Tutorials will discuss particular approaches to and cases of business transformation, and will provide time for student presentations on group project work. The project will give students an opportunity to apply theory to one of a number of case studies.

Assessment

Assessment for this subject will be based on the following items. All assessment items must be attempted to pass the subject.

During semester students will work in groups of three or four on a project to recommend a business transformation approach for a selected case study.

A progress report will be given by project groups in the tutorial sessions in September.
(The exact time will be scheduled in the first tutorial.) This will be worth 20% of subject assessment.

The final (written) report will be due on Friday 25th October. This will be worth 40 % of subject assessment.

There will be a final exam worth 40% of subject assessment.
Students must obtain at least 16/40 in this exam to pass the subject.

Conditions

Under the University's rules, no supplementary examination will be given in this subject. If you miss any piece of assessment through documented sickness or misadventure you should consult with the co-ordinating examiner.

You are reminded of the principles laid down in the "Statement of Good Practice and Ethics in Informal Assessment" on pages 19-21 of the Faculty Handbook. All informal assessment tasks in this subject should be your own original work. Any collaboration with another student should be limited to those matters laid down in Section 2.2 of the Statement. Any infringement by a student will be considered a breach of discipline and will be dealt with in accordance with Rules and By-Laws of the University. Penalties such as zero marks for assignments or subjects may be imposed.
