Len Deighton on Film, TV and Audio

Movies

Three of the first four books (the "Harry Palmer" books) were made into movies in the 1960's (the regrettable omission was "Horse Under Water"). All three starred Michael Caine. In chronological order these are:

o The IPCRESS File.(1965)

o Funeral in Berlin.(1967)

o Billion Dollar Brain.(1967)

The next Len Deighton novel to be filmed was:

o Only When I Larf.(1968)

This was followed by a musical (which Deighton also co-produced):

o Oh! What a Lovely War.(1969)

The Internet Movie Database also lists three other Len Deighton-related movies. Very little information (other than director and cast) is provided on the first:

o Spy Story.(1976)

Although it is unclear how much Len Deighton was involved in them (if at all), the other two star Michael Caine in a reprise of the "Harry Palmer" role:

o Bullet to Beijing.(1995)
o Midnight in St. Petersberg.(1995)

The first of these was shown on The Movie Channel (TMC) on April 5, 1997 and reviewed in the Wall Street Journal on April 7 (page A12). They are currently listed as being available in various video formats on Amazon, and probably elsewhere. Other information on these movies has been contributed to the "Fan Forum" log.

TV Productions

The first three Bernard Samson books were made into a 13 part TV series:

o Game, Set and Match. (Granada Television, 1987)

Apparently the video distribution licence for this series expired in 1993 and it is no longer commercially available (see the note in the log)

Audio Tapes

o Bomber. (BBC Radio Collection, c. 1995)

These audio tapes are taken from a BBC Radio 4 program originally produced in 1995. The set consists of 4 tapes, lasting 3hr 40min, and has the ISBN number 0-563-38856-0. I can't find any reference to it at the BBC web site. However, I was able to order it from the Talking Books Audio Catalogue, and I'm told that the tapes are available in shops in the UK.

Many of LD's other books have also been issued on audio and can be obtained from a number of on-line sources, including Amazon and Book Stacks, as well as the Talking Books Audio Catalogue.
